While your mattresses may look beautiful and cozy with soft, silky sheets, a warm blanket and fluffy pillows, they may not actually be as wonderful as they appear. Mattresses are very often the host to a number of small items you don’t want lurking near you while you sleep, and you probably don’t even realize it.
Surprise Mattress Contents
Your skin is continuously producing new and shedding old skin cells even as you sleep. These skin cells must go somewhere, and they often make their way down into your mattresses.
Every night, as you sweat and drool in your sleep, these body fluids make their way into your mattresses. If you have a cut, wear lotion, or have sex, these fluids seep in too.
Dust mites are small bugs that live in many mattresses. Approximately 10 percent of people are allergic to them, and a much higher percentage of people find them just plain gross.
Bed bugs aren’t just gross; they can be harmful to your health as well. They bite you while you sleep, leaving bite marks on your skin and droppings on your sheets. They are also very hard to get rid of, since they can live up to one year without eating.
While having some of these items in your mattresses can be inevitable, there are ways to prevent the amount. Use plastic mattress covers, wash your sheets often in very hot water and vacuum your mattresses regularly. Don’t let outside pets on your bed, and only stay in reputable hotels that are not as likely to have bed bugs, who might try to catch a ride home with you on your luggage.
Most importantly, if you do have a pest infestation or your mattresses are several years old, it is best to get rid of your old mattresses completely and purchase new ones. Then, you can sleep in peace knowing you don’t have any unwanted guests.
