The best pregame ritual is a good night’s sleep.
Any football coach will tell you, “Championships are won in August.” One college football team has realized that what goes on off the field is just as important as what goes on during practice. The University of Tennessee (UT) has started requiring that each player has a sleep tracking device and a sleep coach to help him interpret the new sleep data.
“It’s all about investing in our players and investing in them reaching their full potential,” said head coach Butch Jones. “That’s all part of our sports science in having sleep coaches and sleep monitors and making sure they get the nine hours that they need. It’s about educating them on how you go to bed at night and how you fall asleep.”
Advanced Technology for Advanced Results
UT football has started monitoring each of its player’s sleep with a mattress sensor that measures his heart rate, respiration and movement as he sleeps. The technology, in coordination with a phone app, also tracks how long it takes players to fall asleep and their resting heart rates. A higher heart rate at rest suggests that their bodies aren’t fully recovering from a day of practice as they sleep.
Sleep Coaches: Just One Piece of the Puzzle
The sleep coaches step in to analyze each player’s data and helps the player set a bedtime that will maximize his sleep quality. The athletes, in turn, are experiencing maximal performance and recovery because they are getting the best quality sleep.
Athletes Aren’t the Only Ones Who Can Benefit
The majority of us may not have access to cutting edge technology like mattress sensors, but general phone apps can help us become more aware of important information regarding our sleep habits.
